History
Taken from the book "Spencer and Surrounding Area History Book: Home For One Hundred Years 1891 - 1991".
Spencer is in an area that was once part of the Dakota Territory, which itself was once part of the original Territory of Nebraska. In 1890, transfer of Boyd County from Dakota Territory to the Territory of Nebraska was proclaimed because of a request to straighten the Nebraska-Dakota line. Boyd County was officially proclaimed a county in Nebraska in 1891.
Situated on a beautiful elevation that rises gradually from Ponca Creek, very near the geographical center of the country, the location for Spencer was chosen to utilize the water available from the creek. The corporation includes 160 acres and was named for an army captain of one of the original men who platted the town. Spencer was incorporated March 5, 1892.
The school district was organized in the fall of 1891, with the post office and the town's first church being established that same year. The railroad came to Spencer in the fall of 1902. An electric light system was installed in 1911, with sewer system and paving following in 1920.
The book contains quite a bit of interesting information and pictures from Spencer's first hundred years; if you have a chance to check it out, it's worth the read.

Why Spencer?
"Growing up, Dexter and I were both raised in a farming/ranching family only about 15 miles apart. Being high school sweethearts, we could never imagine leaving the place that shaped us. Small town living, dedication, and a strong work ethic were instilled in us for both caring for our land and close knit community. It’s all either of us have ever known. We never wanted to leave our roots, rather we wanted to plant our roots even deeper into the community by keeping our family in the place we love. It is our hopes and dreams that our own children will choose to stick around Spencer to not only carry on our family name, but carry on the traditions Spencer and Boyd County has to offer. The future of Spencer is the children within our community. We are living the small-town American dream, and we want to continue the traditions only small town America is capable of having. Spencer is not only an outstanding community. Spencer is our HOME."
